How To Set Up A Google Ads Campaign For Your SEO Agency

Ad Groups & Keywords

One of the most important steps of any Google Ads campaign is to set up a strong keywords foundation.

There are a ton of different tools that you can use for your Google Ads keyword research. The top three contenders are: Ahrefs, Semrush and Google Ads Keyword Planner.

We used Google Ads Keyword Planner for our keyword research. When we look for our first keywords, we look at the following characteristics:

  • High-intent
  • Affordable click price (CPC)
  • Needs to be simple and broad

Note that is a general list, but it’s an excellent place to start your campaigns.

Feel free to add additional ad groups for any specific services that you offer, for example:

  • SEO services for lawyers
  • SEO services in Spanish
  • SEO backlinks agency

You also want to start with phrase match keywords only (i.e. «seo services» with quotation marks). Phrase match is perfect to start since your keywords will give you new related search terms without going too broad.

 

Campaign Types

For SEO Agencies (specially for starters), you want to start with a plain Search Campaign.

Your clients are searching for you on the search bar, so that’s where you want to be.

When you create a campaign, you just have to:

(1) Select Create a campaign without a goal’s guidance

(2) Click on Search.

 

Bidding Strategy

You are most likely starting a Google Ads campaign from scratch, and your main objective is to set up appointments with potential clients.

However, we need to feed that information to the Google Ads account first.

Select a Clicks strategy to start. You want to focus on getting as many clicks as you can until you reach 30-50 conversions before you switch to Maximize Conversions.

There are two main clicks campaign types:

  • Maximum Clicks
  • Manual CPC

If this is your first time using Google Ads, I would recommend you to do a Maximum Clicks campaign.

You can leave your maximum cost per click open, or set up a Max CPC price. We usually set this value as Avg. CPC x 1.25 to give it some room. In this case, your Avg. CPC is $24.25, so use $30.31 as your Max. CPC.

 

Campaign Settings

Uncheck the Search and Display Networks. These networks usually underperform, so you want to start with Search only. You can explore these networks in A/B tests in the future.

On Location, select United States (country) or any specific location that you want to advertise on.

On Ad Schedule, we usually advertise from 8-5AM, Monday-Friday. However, this depends on your business’s operations.

 

Ad Copy

For the Ad Copy, add your landing page as your final URL, your keywords on the display path, and 3 compelling headlines/descriptions.

Make sure to include your keywords in your ad copy to improve your quality scores.

We usually do 2 ads per ad group and A/B test them.

 

Daily Budget

The Budget is a tricky part. How we do it:

  • Grab your Avg. CPC.
  • Multiply it by 1.25x.
  • Multiply it by 10 for 10 clicks on a daily basis (Avg. CPC x 1.25 x 10).

In this case, your daily budget should be around $303.13.

 

Conversion Tracking

This is a very important step.

You want to track two conversion actions: phone calls and lead forms.

We suggest tracking both conversions through Google Tag Manager (GTM).
